“L’Embrocation Chanteclair” vintage poster by Michel Liebeaux
“L’Embrocation Chanteclair” vintage poster by Michel Liebeaux, circa 1920, Paris, France. In excellent condition. Archival framing, black and gold frame with UV plexiglass to preserve this special work on paper, backed with linen.
Liebeaux, or Mich, as he was known, produced many great whimsical posters in the style of Leonetto Cappiello, an Italian and French poster art designer and painter, who mainly lived and worked in Paris. He is now often called ‘the father of modern advertising’ because of his innovation in poster design. One can imagine seeing this poster on the streets of Paris and in cafe’s in the era of the literary elite like Earnest Hemmingway and James Joyce. This print transforms you to a different place and a different time.
Advertising the revitalizing body lotion for athletes, this vintage poster displays the artistic style of the early 1900’s. A fit man emerges from the bottle symbolizing vitality.
An embrocation is meant to be rubbed on painful skin areas for relief, but in his illustration the artist implies that Chanteclair will do much more. His muscular genie has escaped from the bottle charged with electricity, for the product is, as the poster declares, “the developer of athletes.” The product claims also that it “softens, fortifies, and electrifies,” the last action in keeping with the now-discarded belief that electricity had health-giving properties.
Consequently these posters have become classics, that are highly sought after by today’s collectors. This well preserved poster is perfect for a bar/restaurant setting, a sports club or den. It is a nice match for any decor, modern or traditional.
The conservation framing of this poster and UV protective plexiglass have protected this piece from the damage that sunlight that would normally create. The print has not faded and deteriorated. The result is a poster in excellent condition with all of the colors still remaining vivid. Because plexiglass is used rather than traditional glass, the piece is lighter and much easier to hang on a wall. There is no point in buying and owning a vintage poster if you allow sunlight to deteriorate it over time.
