What Does Your Closet Say About You?
Closets can be a source of pride or something that belongs behind closed doors. The 21st century closet is a statement, a showcase not just for clothing and accessories. It is a representation of how we live, our organizational style, and who we are. They are an emotional investment that should support our lifestyles. Closet design and storage solutions have become a highly specialized industry, tailored to meet individual needs for current items, out of season storage, and boutique display. Start thinking about hangers but think beyond…
Think primary dressing rooms, children’s closets, linen closets, and guest rooms, but not just clothing and accessories, think pantries, walk-in storage, garage storage, and basement organization all improved with thoughtful design. First assess current needs, then what the future will acquire. Where is the best location for storage, what proximity takes precedence? And most importantly, what is the view when we walk through the closet door? Closets should be considered on the same personal level as kitchens and bathrooms. The material we use have an impact. The hardware needs to be functional but also aesthetic. Flooring can add or detract from how the space feels and sounds. Doors and drawers can make a statement. Details make the difference!

Is Your Closet a Real Representation of You and Your Lifestyle?
And don’t forget lighting, once things are organized, it’s always nice to be able to see them, because many functions beyond storage may be taking place in these rooms. Simply hanging things up or placing items in bins or on shelves is just the beginning. Consider three sources for lighting: lighting as the overall ambient source, lighting for a specific task, and lighting as a decorative accent. Can the light turn on when a door or drawer opens and turns off when it closes? Temperature, humidity, and pest control may need to be considered. Grandma had a cedar closet for a reason!
Alternatives in Closet Design Exist
Design and functionality are married when you think about how items are stored. We can brainstorm a number of solutions for every item in the closet.
- Should a hanger show the side or face of an item?
- Do shoes belong on flat or slanted shelves?
- So many shoes! Is there a place to sit and put on shoes?
- Can a shelf be pulled out for easier access?
- Can the space have a window and does it need window treatment to protect items from direct sunlight and fading?
- How big can a mirror be and is there enough space to stand in front of it?
- Can mirrors be a pair or triple set and hinged?
- Which items want to be on display and which want to be hidden?
- Do the drawers need dividers?
- How easy is the hardware to operate and does it self-close?
- Is there a need for security?
- Can the tall storage be reached easily or do steps or a ladder need to be introduced?
- Does the laundry need a place?

Uniformity in closet design is not necessarily a good solution.
Some items are wider or thicker or heavier than others.
